Amnesty International's New China Strategy
Jan 30, 2004 | 22:13 GMT
Summary
Amnesty International is pressuring Microsoft to use its position in China to influence that government's policy toward Internet dissidents. Amnesty's tactic is part of a broader strategy to force companies to become advocates for a binding set of international rules on business and human rights. Amnesty and other NGOs have almost no direct leverage with Beijing, so they hope to turn Microsoft into an advocate at home for human rights reform in China and elsewhere.
