Despite possessing the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa lacks the international influence of a country that views itself as a continental leader. As the ruling African National Congress prepares for a Dec. 16-20 leadership convention that will almost certainly name President Jacob Zuma party leader for another term, Pretoria has begun a push to expand its strategic clout by investing in the West and elsewhere in Africa.
