Compared with the SARS outbreak in 2003, Chinese authorities have so far acted more quickly and more aggressively to curb the spread of the coronavirus that originated in Wuhan. But whether those efforts have enough of an impact to contain its spread remains in doubt, as the number of confirmed cases both in China and around the world continues to grow.

As of Jan. 28, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world had reached nearly 4,700 with a death toll of 106. Suspected or confirmed cases in Germany, Taiwan, Vietnam and Japan include patients who hadn't recently traveled to China, suggesting human-to-human transmissions outside of the country.
